Better Lighting
Narrative Scene | Directed by John Young
"Better Lighting" by Dustin Sullivan is a contemporary exploration of the awkward, humorous, and vulnerable dynamics of modern dating and self-image. The scene follows two characters, played by Kelly Collins and Daniel Madigan, as they navigate the physical and emotional discomfort of being "seen." The title serves as a double entendre: a literal search for "better lighting" to mask insecurities and a metaphorical desire to be viewed in a "better light" by a romantic partner.
The Production
This scene holds a special place in my journey. Shot in the biting February cold on the SUNY Purchase campus, I collaborated with my advanced BFA film students on a night exterior behind the Dance building. Utilizing a simple lunch bench as our stage, Director John Young and I leaned into a mix of sharp comedy and raw honesty, using the visual language of the night to underscore the characters' obsessions with their own flaws.
Advancing Kosen-rufu
As a cinematographer, I am dedicated to practicing my art as a means of advancing Kosen-rufu—the Buddhist philosophy of creating world peace through humanistic values and artistic harmony. This mission is fueled by the practice of Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo, through which I strive to foster peace and connection within the world of independent film.
